Discover Esso Mediterranean Bistro

Walking into Esso Mediterranean Bistro for the first time felt less like discovering a new spot and more like being let in on a local secret. Tucked along 17933 Ventura Blvd, Encino, CA 91316, United States, this neighborhood bistro has the kind of easy confidence that comes from doing the basics right-fresh ingredients, thoughtful cooking, and a genuine connection to the people who walk through the door. I stopped in initially on a casual weeknight after hearing several nearby shop owners mention it in passing, and that kind of organic recommendation usually says more than any ad ever could.

The menu leans into classic Mediterranean comfort with a modern California sensibility. You’ll see familiar staples like hummus, falafel, shawarma, and grilled seafood, but the execution is what stands out. When I asked the server how the lamb was prepared, they explained the slow-marination process using olive oil, garlic, and herbs before grilling, a method rooted in Eastern Mediterranean kitchens. That attention to process shows up on the plate: tender meat, balanced seasoning, and no heavy sauces masking flavor. One regular sitting nearby told me he orders the same dish every week because, in his words, consistently good food is harder to find than fancy food, and Esso delivers on that promise.

From a nutrition standpoint, Mediterranean-style eating has been widely studied. Research published by institutions like Harvard Medical School has consistently linked Mediterranean diets to improved heart health and lower inflammation, largely due to ingredients like olive oil, legumes, vegetables, and lean proteins. You can see those principles reflected throughout the menu here, making it a popular choice for diners who want food that feels indulgent but still aligns with balanced eating. That said, portions are generous, so it’s easy to turn a light meal into a satisfying feast.

The dining room itself feels relaxed and unpretentious. Natural light during the day and warm ambient lighting in the evening make it equally suitable for lunch meetings or laid-back dinners. The location in Encino helps too; Ventura Boulevard is busy, but once you’re inside, the noise fades into the background. I’ve noticed a mix of families, couples, and solo diners, which usually signals a restaurant that’s comfortable in its own skin.

Reviews around the neighborhood often highlight service, and that lines up with my experience. Staff members are knowledgeable without being pushy, and they’re quick to explain unfamiliar dishes or suggest pairings. One evening, I watched a server walk a first-time guest through the differences between regional Mediterranean spreads, breaking down flavors in a way that felt approachable rather than scripted. That kind of interaction builds trust, especially for diners exploring a cuisine they may not know well.

There are a few limitations worth mentioning. Parking along Ventura Boulevard can be tight during peak hours, and while the menu covers a wide range, those looking for ultra-traditional regional dishes from a single Mediterranean country might find the selection more pan-Mediterranean than strictly specific. Still, for most diners, that variety is part of the appeal.

What keeps people coming back isn’t just the food, though. It’s the sense that this bistro understands its community and cooks accordingly. Whether you’re grabbing a quick lunch, planning a relaxed dinner, or scanning reviews for a reliable spot to bring friends, Esso Mediterranean Bistro fits naturally into everyday life in Encino, without trying too hard to impress-and that’s exactly why it works.

  • I was pleasantly surprised by my experience at Esso Mediterranean Bistro. Despite being unfamiliar with Mediterranean cuisine, I found the combination kebab, Lebni, and Arayes to be delicious and flavorful. Highly recommend trying Esso Mediterranean Bistro!

  • Very adorable Middle-Eastern restaurant hidden in Encino. Very fresh and high quality foods, uniquely & deliciously flavored! A MUST VISIT LOCATION! Amazingly priced for the quality you get. My favorite is the chicken kebab (so moist & juicy), fattoush salad (quality fresh veggies & crunchy bread - others should learn!), hummus (without garlic, so you can enjoy during lunch meetings ), and can't forget the cheese boregs (definitely a must try at least once). We also love the tikka (filet mignon steak, marinated with unique flavors... it's so soft, melts-in-your mouth delicious)! Fyi: on the side, the owner caters high-end special events all over Cali (Malibu, Calabasas, Laguna beach, Newport, Fresno, Beverly Hills, Simi Valley, etc...). I follow them on Instagram - the grazing tables, display of foods is AMAZING!!! It's honestly the most entertaining Instagram site! I highly recommend trying Esso Mediterranean Bistro at least once... you'll be hooked!

  • I was just close by at the Plaza and wasn't planning on eating here. I just walked in because it was the closest to the store that I got out of. The food was really good. I ordered some sort of kebab, rice, and salad, which was all on one dish. Only $18 and I that was a lot of food. Great food and service. Thank you Esso Mediterranean bistro!
